LEGO® Diorama Builder and MOC Creator - Louis Nugroho

Louis Nugroho memiliki banyak set mainan LEGO lawas yang sebagian dimilikinya sejak kecil. Seiring waktu, dia mencoba mencari kembali koleksi LEGO yang dimilikinya sewaktu kecil dan juga menambah lebih banyak set lagi. Setelah set LEGO lawas tersebut terkumpul banyak, lalu membuat perencanaan diorama kota LEGO dengan aplikasi 3D sebelum akhirnya direalisasikan dengan menggunakan set yang dimilikinya. Yuk dilihat seperti apa diorama dan koleksinya!
Louis Nugroho owns many vintage LEGO sets that he owned since a child. Over time, he tried to find his childhood LEGO collections and added more sets. After he collected a sizeable number of LEGO sets, he created a LEGO city diorama layout using 3D rendering application before he built it with his owned sets. Let us look at his diorama and collection!

Sudah berapa lama sih om mengkoleksi LEGO®?
(How long have you been collecting LEGO®?)
Untuk koleksi LEGO baru mulai tahun lalu Agustus 2020, tepatnya dari mengumpulkan kembali part2 LEGO yang ilang dari LEGO masa kecil pemberian orang tua, karena sangat memorable. Beberapa set akhirnya terkumpul part2nya dan berhasil dirakit kembali, itu sangat menyenangkan. Berhubung setelah masa kecil itu tidak pernah tau akan info LEGO lagi, ternyata banyak set2 yang bagus yang terlewatkan. Dari situ saya mulai untuk membeli set set baru dengan membeli part2 dan merakitnya.
For new LEGO collection I started from last August 2020, when I collecting all LEGO parts for sets that had been missing. Those were the sets from my childhood given by my parents. They hold a sentimental value. I finally able to collect parts for some sets and successfully assembled them back, and it feel so exhilarating. After my childhood, I never follow any LEGO news anymore and after I exited the dark age I realised that there were so many great sets that I missed. Since then I started to buy parts for those great sets and assemble them.
Bisa diceritakan kisahnya mengapa tertarik dengan LEGO®?
(Can you tell us your story why you get interested with LEGO®?)
Awalnya dari dibelikan sama orang tua, buat anak-anak pasti ini sangat menarik karena bisa merakit dipandu sama instruksi dan ketika jadi itu sangat menyenangkan. Orang tua lalu membelikan beberapa set dan karena saya masih anak-anak, jadi set itu dibuat bongkar pasang, dan di sini lah menariknya LEGO,merakit dari part-part yang ada. Saya senang membuat kreasi sendiri dan ini sangat seru.
At first my parents bought it for me, for children, it is very exciting because they can build the set by following instructions and it feel so exciting. My parents then bought more sets and during my childhood, I like to dismantle and reassemble them which is the fun of playing LEGO by building with parts. From there I feel happy to create my own creation and it feel so fun.
Set pertama yang om waktu kecil ada masih ingat yang mana? Bisa diinfokan ke kita?
(What was your first set during childhood? Can you tell us about it?)
LEGO pertama kalau tidak salah ingat antara 375 Classic Castle atau Space Classic 6980 Galaxy Commander. Setelah itu menyusul beberapa set space classic seperti 6951 Robot Command Center, 6950 Mobile Rocket Transport, 462 Mobile Rocket Launcher. Saya juga ada memiliki beberapa set Fabuland (salah satunya set 344 Service Station dan set set karakter fabuland) serta set 733 dan 744.
My first LEGO as far as I can remember is 375 Classic Castle or Classic Space 6980 Galaxy Commander. After that I got several classic Space sets such as 6951 Robot Command Center, 6950 Mobile Rocket Transport, 462 Mobile Rocket Launcher. I also owned several Fabuland sets (one of them is set 344 Service Station and Fabuland character sets) along with set 733 and 744.
Om ada buat diorama kota LEGO®, tema utamanya apa saja?
(You have a LEGO® city diorama, what is the main theme?)
Saya ada buat diorama kota LEGO Jadul, semua dipicu dari melihat katalog jadul yang saya punya. Dari katalog tersebut bagian yang saya suka adalah City dan Space Section. Suatu kali di KLI ada yang menjual Baseplate dari set 6382 Fire Station dan beberapa partnya, akhir berniat untuk membangun semua set ini.
Setelah selesai dan saya punya beberapa baseplate jalanan, pikir apa buat mini town aja kali ya? Paling tidak punya MINI LEGO TOWN CLASSIC, bisa dibilang ini tema yang mau saya buat. Mencoba mengatur baseplate LEGO yang enak sambil imajinasi set apa yang bagus buat kota kecil ini, kalo cuma dikepala agak sulit untuk dituangkan, akhirnya saya mendesain lewat stud.io 2.0. Disini saya merakit digital beberapa set-set town yang mau saya masukan dan lumayan berhasil juga merancang kota mini. Ternyata tidak berhenti sampai disini, imajinasi mendesain kota terus berkembang, dari fase 1 sampai fase 7. Yang berhasil direalisasikan adalah fase 3, selebihnya hanya sebatas image hahaha.
I created vintage LEGO city which was triggered when I looked at all of my vintage catalogs that I owned. From those catalogs, the parts that I like is the City and Space Section. Once in KLI, I saw someone selling baseplate from 6382 Fire Station with some of the parts. In the end I decided to build all of these sets.
When I finished building them, I had several road plates with me. So I thought should I build a mini town? At least having a CLASSIC MINI LEGO TOWN, I can say this is the theme that I want. To arrange the LEGO baseplate easily while imagining which sets to implement for this small town was difficult to do in head, so I decided to design through stud.io 2.0. From there, I assembled several town sets that I want to place and the result is not bad for planning this mini town. But I did not stop at that, my imagination of designing the town keep developing from phase 1 into phase 7. I have realised it up to phase 3, the rest of the phases are still in design image, lol.
Apakah set LEGO® pertama om nanti akan menjadi pusat dari dioramanya? Bagaimana cara untuk blending dengan set yang lebih modern?
(Are you going to make your first LEGO® set as the center piece of the diorama? How do you blend it with the newer modern sets?)
Awalnya tidak terpikir apa yang bakal jadi pusat dari diorama ini, setelah melihat design, kenapa ga dimasukan aja set Classic Castle ke dalam diorama ini, pasti jadi unik. Dan pada akhirnya ini terjadi dalam design fase 2. Saya ada teman2 dalam satu group, mereka memang penggemar berat LEGO castle, islander, forestman, dan adventure. Ini menimbulkan ide baru lagi, sepertinya bisa dimasukan dalam desain kota. Design kota pun berkembang lagi dan untuk membuat jadi satu saya mengambil unsur lingkungan dari set tersebut, contohnya forestman, tema utama mereka hutan, kalau dimasukan ke kota bisa dijadikan hutan kota dan didalamnya ada set forestman. Kurang lebih seperti itu cara saya memblending set set yang lebih modern.
Initially, I did not think of what is the center piece of the diorama, but after doing the design, I was wondering maybe I should put Classic Castle into the diorama. It will be unique and I made it happen on the second phase of my design. I have friends in a group and they are die hard fans of LEGO Castle, Islander, Forestman and adventure. And that instilled more ideas for me and I can put it in my city diorama. My city diorama keep getting more developed and to make them blend into one, I take environmental element from that set, for instance take forestman, their main theme is forest, so if I place them into city, I can make a city forest park and it will contain the forestman set. That is my way in blending modern sets with the vintage sets.
Om ada pakai apps Stud.io untuk modelling 3D LEGO®. Apakah saat merencanakan diorama selalu lewat apps tersebut baru dirakit fisik?
(I see that you utilise Stud.io apps for modelling the 3D LEGO®. Do you always plan your diorama through that apps before physically assembling them?)
Betul, saya selalu menggunakan aplikasi ini untuk merencanakan diorama, tapi tidak tutup kemungkinan pas merakit bisa timbul ide lagi. Tapi bagi saya lebih enak mendesain dulu melalui aplikasi baru dirakit.
Yes, I always used this apps to plan on my diorama, nevertheless, sometimes when I am assembling the city, ideas can pop in. But for me, it is more enjoyable to design on apps then assembling the city.
Saat ini progress dari rancangan fisik kota yang dirakit sudah berapa persen yang jadi?
(For now, what is the physical progress of your city diorama?)
Saya baru saja menyelesaikan fase tiga setelah menunggu parts datang.
So far, the progress of the city has reached 70% completion, I am still waiting for a couple of more sets.
Apakah om gemar merakit MOC? Bisa diceritakan di sini?
(Do you like to create MOC? Can you tell us more about it?)
MOC itu sesuatu yang seru. Sewaktu memulai main LEGO lagi di Agustus 2020, saya sempat tanya sama teman, apakah ada program yang dpt membuat MOC jadi bisa ngerakit pas dengan jumlah part yang dibuat, akhirnya ketemu program yang ada di bricklink, namanya studio 2. Saya mencoba mencari tutorial dari Youtube dan belajar dari sana. Saya suka menggunakan program ini karena bentuknya 3D jadi menarik sewaktu mendesain. Hasil pertama desain saya adalah motor space classic, karena saya suka lini space classic. Hasil design pertama bisa dibilang kurang bagus 😝 haha. Selain mendesain saya juga suka modifikasi dan recolor dari set LEGO yg ada menggunakan program studio ini. MOC yang saya rakit real ada beberapa, seperti Space Police 2, Ice Planet, Kios Pisang untuk set kota.
Ninjago adalah salah satu lini modern yg saya suka, terutama set modular ninjago city, desainnya unik dan menarik. Berhubung belum punya setnya, saya coba merakit 3 set modular ninjago city secara digital dan bermaksud sekalian melihat teknik mendesain dari 3 set ini. Setelah itu saya pikir2 coba buat 1 set untuk menambah set dari ninjago ini. Walaupun sudah melakukan dengan cara atm (amati tiru modifikasi) masih belum bisa dengan teknik yg rumit. Akhirnya saya selesai mengerjakannya tapi gak berhenti disana karena sepertinya menarik kalau tambah 1 set lagi.
MOC is sonething exciting. When I first played LEGO again on August 2020, I asked my friends whether there was an apps that can create MOC according to LEGO parts, thus I met apps in bricklink called Stud.io 2. I then try to get tutorial from Youtube and learn from there. I like using this apps because it is in 3D mode when I work on the design. My first design result is Classic Space motorbike because I like Classic Space theme. I can say my first design is not that nice looking 😝, lol. Beside designing, I also like to modify and recolor existing LEGO set using this studio app. MOC there were several MOCs that I assemble from my designs, they are Space Police 2, Ice Planet and Banana Kiosk for my city theme.
Ninjago is one of the modern line that I like, especially the modular Ninjago City which has an unique and interesting design. Since I do not have the sets yet, I tried to assemble the 3 Ninjago City modular sets digitally so I could learn the technique from designing these 3 sets. After that I thought of trying to create 1 more set to add into the Ninjago set. Although I already use ICM (investigate-copy-modify) technique, I am still unable to build using sophisticated build. But I finally finished it and realised it will be interesting to add 1 more set.

LEGO IDEAS ini menarik, banyak designer2 yang memasukan ide mereka ke website ini, seperti Winnie The Pooh, Mickey and Minnie Black and White, The Flintstone yang akhirnya menjadi kenyataan dan masih banyak karya designer lain. Saya berpikir kenapa gak saya coba masukin saja kesana untuk design ninjago ini, kalo beruntung bisa dibuat kalo gak setidaknya saya share hasil design saya ke LEGO. Nanti kita lihat hasilnya. LEGO IDEAS is interesting, there are so many designers that submitted their ideas to this website, like Winnie The Pooh, Mickey and Minnie Black and White, The Flintsones and all of those changed into reality along with other designer creations. Then I thought why don’t I also submit my Ninjago creation, if I am lucky, I can get it made into a set, otherwise, I can still share my designs to LEGO. We shall see how it goes. Apakah om punya preferensi khusus mengoleksi LEGO? Seperti tema, set atau bentuk spesifik?
(Do you have special preference for your collection? Maybe theme, sets or specific builds?)
Pada umumnya untuk mengoleksi LEGO harus komplit semua set untuk 1 theme dan part nya harus lengkap dan sesuai. Saya sendiri ingin melengkapi set 1 theme, tapi memang semua itu tergantung budget hahaha akhirnya saya pikir cukup hanya mengumpulkan set set menarik dari theme yang saya suka.
Usually to collect a LEGO, it has to be complete sets for a specific theme and all of those parts should be accounted for and match. I am myself want to complete the sets for 1 theme, but it is all depends on the budget, lol. So I finally think it will be interesting to just gather the interesting sets from the themes I like.

Wow!! Tidak dapat disangka begitu banyak LEGO lawas yang dimiliki oleh Louis. Louis benar benar berjuang untuk mengumpulkan kembali semua set LEGO lawas yang pernah dimilikinya saat kecil dan terus menambah koleksinya. Pengarang juga takjub kepada Louis yang begitu serius mendalami penggunaan aplikasi Stud.io 2.0 untuk membantunya membuat MOC serta menyusun perencanaan diorama kota lawasnya.
Pengarang berencana untuk melakukan wawancara lebih lanjut untuk membahas MOC LEGO dari Louis pada kesempatan mendatang. Whow! I never seen so many vintage LEGO owned by Louis. He really strife to gather all of his childhood vintage LEGO sets and keep adding his collection. The author is also astonished with Louis who learn stud.io 2.0 very seriously to assist in creating MOC and his city diorama layout.
The author is planning to have a further interview with Louis to discuss his LEGO MOC on separate occasion in the future. The author wishes that Louis can continue to develop his LEGO diorama into phase 7 that will change from LEGO town diorama into a large metropolitan city.
