Sudah berapa lama sih om hobi LEGO? Kenapa om sampai bisa suka dengan LEGO? Ada ceritanya kah?
(How long have you been playing with LEGO? Why do you like LEGO? Any story?)
Karena saat kecil saya dibelikan 1 set LEGO Duplo oleh orang tua dan sering saya mainkan bersama adik. Sayangnya karena harga LEGO memang cukup mahal, saya tidak punya LEGO System (LEGO kecil), bila ingin bermain LEGO System saya harus datang ke rumah tetangga. Itulah sekilas perkenalan saya dengan LEGO saat masih kecil.
When I were a kid, my parents bought me a LEGO Duplo by my parents and I played it together with my younger sibling. Unfortunately, since LEGO is expensive, I did not own any LEGO System, so if I want to play with LEGO System, I have to visit my neighbour. That was my introduction with LEGO when I was a kid.
Apakah masih ingat set pertama yang om miliki? Bisa dibagi kisahnya?

Untuk set LEGO pertama yang saya punya saat kecil, saya tidak tahu set Duplo seri apa. Untuk LEGO pertama yang saya beli setelah dewasa sebetulnya untuk hadiah anak pertama saya. Saya ingin belikan set education yang isinya campur-campur supaya anak saya bisa lebih bebas berkreasi dengan basic bricks dan tidak terpaku oleh buku instruksi tema tertentu. Namun pada saat itu di Indonesia tidak ada yang jual, semua yang dijual di toko dan mal adalah set-set tema, seperti Star Wars, City, dll. Sehingga saya coba pesan khusus PO 3 bulan melalui LEGO affiliate educator di Senayan City, set pertama yang saya beli pada waktu itu Lego Education 9385.
For the first LEGO set when I were a child, I did not remember the Duplo set number anymore. For my first LEGO set that I bought after I am an adult was for my first child. I want to bought him educational set with mix content so he can create with basic blocks freely and not having to depend on specific instruction. At that time there is no such set sold. ALl the sets available in the shopping centre and shops were sets with specific themes such as Star Ward, City, etc. In the end I had to make a special order for 3 months through LEGO education affiliate in Senayan City, the first set I bought at that time is LEGO Education 9385.

Set Lego yang pertama yang menarik buat saya pribadi adalah set-set dari modular building, namun karena set-set tersebut adalah set exclusive yang seharusnya hanya di jual di LEGO Certified Store (LCS), sedangkan di Indonesia pada tahun 2013 belum ada, jadi cukup sulit mendapatkannya karena hanya dijual di event-event toys fair dan jadi rebutan. Pada akhirnya saya mendapatkannya di forum Kaskus dari kolektor LEGO yang pensiun, yaitu Pet Shop 10218 dan Grand Emporium 10211.
The first LEGO sets for myself are the modular building sets, however, since those are exclusive sets that only sold in LEGO Certified Store (LCS), which on 2013 was still non-existent, it is difficult to get. Those sets were only sold in toys fair events and everybody wanted them. In the end I got them from an ex-LEGO collector which were Pet Shop 10218 and Grand Emporium 10211.
Bagaimana cerita awal mulanya dari kolektor LEGO menjadi kreator yang membuat kreasi LEGO sendiri (MOC: My Own Creation)?
(What your early story from LEGO collector into creating LEGO MOC?)
Awalnya saya murni kolektor set, terutama modular building, City dan Star Wars. Namun karena sifat mengkoleksi itu lama kelamaan bertambah terus, sehingga rumah saya jadi penuh dengan pajangan set-set LEGO. Dari yang awalnya hanya beberapa pajangan dan enak dilihat, hingga akhirnya menjadi banyak, penuh dan berantakan. Pada akhirnya beberapa set harus saya taruh di gudang karena tidak ada tempat pajang lagi.
At first, I am purely only collect sets, especially modular building, City and Star Wars. But the nature of collecting means everything keep adding up, my house become full of LEGO sets. Initially it were only few sets as display and nice to look at. But when it become a lot, everything become packed and cluttered. In the end I have to most a couple of sets into the store room because I don’t have any space yet for display.

Disitu awal mulanya saya berpikir untuk merubah arah hobi LEGO saya dari koleksi untuk mencoba menjadi kreator LEGO (kalau di luar negeri disebutnya Builder, kalau di Indonesia disebutnya MOCer), karena sebagai kreator siklusnya akan seperti ini: berkreasi, lalu dokumentasi, lalu dibongkar. Sehingga tidak perlu tempat pajang yang luas, juga part-part LEGO yang dipunya bisa dimanfaatkan berkali-kali untuk membuat berbagai macam kreasi tanpa batas.
Then I started to think of changing my LEGO hobby direction from collecting into LEGO Creator (in other countries it is called Builder, in Indonesia we call it MOCer) because the creator cycle is like this: creating, documenting, then dismantling. So we do not require large space for display and we can keep using the LEGO parts to create various unlimited creations.
Om kan suka membuat MOC disertai tutorialnya. Bagaimana ceritanya bisa membuat tutorial MOC LEGO?
(You like to create MOC with the tutorial. Why did you create LEGO MOC tutorial?)
Awal mula membuat tutorial di Youtube saya sebetulnya karena dua hal. Hal pertama sebagai bagian dokumentasi kreasi saya. Selain dokumentasi foto tentunya jika ada dokumentasi video terasa lebih lengkap, juga bila nanti setelah kreasinya telah dibongkar saya tetap bisa membuat ulang dengan mudah bila ada dokumentasi cara membuatnya (tutorialnya).
I created tutorial on my Youtube video is because of two things. The first thing is as part of my creations documentation. Beside as photo documentations, I thought it would be more complete with video documentation as well because after I disassembled them, I can still recreate them easily if I have the documentation on how to build it (the tutorial).

Hal kedua adalah untuk berbagi dan memudahkan orang lain yang ingin membuat ulang kreasi saya. Harapan saya dapat menginspirasi orang lain untuk membuat karya kreasinya sendiri pada akhirnya.
The second thing is to share and make it easier for people who want to build my creations. I hope to be able to inspire people to create their own creations in the future.
Apa ada pengalaman-pengalaman menarik selama om menjadi MOCer atau Builder LEGO?
(What are the interesting experiences during yout time as MOCer or LEGO Builder?)
Cukup banyak seru-serunya, seperti beberapa karya saya mendapatkan kehormatan dimuat di majalah dan buku LEGO di Amerika Serikat, seperti buku “Beautiful LEGO 2”, buku “Beautiful LEGO Wild”, majalah “BrickJournal”, dan majalah “BRICKS”.
There are a lot of excitements such as when my creations received honours to be published in US based LEGO magazine and book such as the “Beautiful LEGO 2”, “Beautiful LEGO Wild”, “BrickJournal” magazine, and “BRICKS” magazine.

Juga pernah mengirimkan karya saya untuk dipajang di BrickWorld Chicago 2014 dan pernah ikut lomba duel 1vs1 melawan builder-builder terbaik dari negara lain dan dapat menang 2 kali, bernama “Iron Builder” yang di kelola oleh tim TheBrothersBricks dari Amerika Serikat.
I also sent my creations to BrickWorld Chicago 2014 and entered 1 vs 1 duel competition against the best builders from other countries and won 2 times. The competition was called “Iron Builder” managed by TheBrothersBricks from United States.
Apa saja tema atau rakitan MOC yang biasa om buat?
(What are your MOC themes or creations?)
Pada dasarnya saya tidak ada tema khusus atau spesialisasi tema. Saya suka dengan banyak ragam tema, seperti city, building, furniture, vehicles (mobil, motor), sci-fi, space, star wars, castle & medieval, makanan, benda atau objek keseharian, mech & robot, dan banyak lainnya.
Basically, I do not have favourite theme nor specialised in specific theme. I like various of themes such as city, building, furniture, vehicles (cars, motorbike), science fiction, space, star wars, castle & medieval, food, daily things or objects, mech & robot, and so on.

Kelebihan dari suka banyak tema tentunya saya tidak pernah kehabisan tema yang ingin saya buat, dan kekurangannya adalah waktunya yang terbatas dan juga setiap tema butuh parts-parts khusus dan spesifik, sehingga koleksi parts saya mau tidak mau harus sangat beragam agar bisa membuat berbagai tema tersebut.
The advantage of various themes is such that I never run out of theme to build but the disadvantage of course time which is always limited. The other disadvantage is that each theme will need special and specific parts which means I need to have various parts to be able to create all those themes.
Berapa lama waktu yang terpakai untuk membuat sebuah MOC?
(How long do you spend the time for creating MOC?)
Tergantung ukurannya, bila kecil mungkin hanya beberapa menit atau jam, bila besar mungkin bisa beberapa hari sampai beberapa minggu. Belum lagi bila ada parts yang kurang dan harus beli terlebih dahulu dan menunggu hingga datang agar bisa dilanjutkan kreasinya.
It depends on the sizes, if it is small, it might only take several minutes or hours. If it is large, it will take few days or few weeks. Not to mention when there are missing parts and I need to buy them first and wait until they arrive to continue the creations.
Apakah om punya metode atau proses khusus dalam membuat kreasi LEGO?
(Do you have special method or process in your LEGO creations?)
Proses saya dalam membuat kreasi LEGO (My process in creating LEGO creations):
Pertama, menentukan tema yang mau dibuat, misalkan robotkah, rumahkah, mobilkah.
(First, deciding the theme to create, it could be a robot, house or car).Kedua, mencari referensi dan contoh objek asli di dunia nyatanya.
(Second, find reference and the object in real world).Ketiga, menentukan mau membuatnya sebesar apa dan dalam skala apa, microkah, minikah, skala minifigure kah, dan sebagainya.
(Third, to decide how large the creations and in what scale whether micro build, mini buld, minifig-scale or other option).

Keempat, mulai membuat dari bagian yang paling mudah, atau justru sebaliknya dari bagian yang paling sulit.
(Four, start from making the simplest part, or on the contrary, start from the difficult part).Kelima, setelah jadi di foto pakai hape dan dibiarkan 1-2 hari.
(Five, after I built it, I took photo using mobile/cell phone and left it for 1-2 days).Keenam, di fine tune dan disempurnakan lagi, dengan cara diperbaiki atau ditambah detail-detailnya.
(Six, I fune tune and make modified it again by fixing or adding more details).Ketujuh, dokumentasi: di foto cantik lalu dan atau lalu dibuatkan video tutorialnya.
(Seven, documentation: take great photos and create the tutorial video).
Dimana om biasa membeli parts-parts yang dibutuhkan untuk membuat kreasi LEGO?
(Where did you buy the parts to create LEGO MOC?)
Di Bricklink.com, terutama membeli dari seller-seller yang berdomisili di Indonesia. Juga suka beli di Tokopedia bila kepepet, karena secara umum harga parts di Tokopedia lebih mahal daripada di Bricklink.
On bricklink.com from Indonesian sellers. Sometimes I also buy them from Tokopedia when I need them quick. Generally, the prices on Tokopedia are more expensive than on Bricklink.
Bagaimana cara om menyimpan part-part LEGO?
(How do you store your LEGO parts?)
Saya menyimpannya menggunakan laci-laci kecil yang umumnya digunakan untuk menyimpan baut dan mur yang dijual di tempat perkakas, dan juga laci-laci sedang yang umumnya digunakan untuk menyimpan alat tulis, serta laci-laci besar yang umumnya digunakan untuk menyimpan kertas ukuran A4.
I store them using small storage drawers used to store bolts and nuts. Those drawers are sold on tools shop. I also use medium sized drawers used for stationary and large drawers used to store A4 sized papers.
Bagaimana cara om mengkategorikan penyimpanan komponen LEGO?
(How do you categorized your LEGO parts in storage?)
Untuk pengkategorian mayoritas saya kelompokkan dari bentuknya, namun untuk basic bricks saya kelompokkan berdasarkan warna.
I mostly categorised my parts based on shapes, but for basic bricks, I categorise them based on colours.
Bagaimana cara om memajang koleksi dan kreasi LEGO di rumah?
(How do you display your LEGO collection and creations at home?)
Ada yang diletakkan di atas laci-laci parts saya dan ada juga yang saya masukkan ke aquarium kosong lalu ditumpuk agar menyerupai lemari pajang kaca 😁
I placed them on top of my parts’ drawers and I placed some on stacked empty aquariums which resembles display cases 😁
Kalau om bisa memberikan masukan kepada perusahaan LEGO, apa yang akan om sampaikan kepada mereka?
(If you can give inputs to the LEGO Group, what will you tell them?)
Agar harga LEGO bisa lebih murah secara global supaya lebih terjangkau untuk masyarakat yang lebih luas daripada terpaksa harus beli LEGO KW atau LEGO bootleg karena harga LEGO asli terlalu mahal. Hal ini juga berlaku untuk pemegang brand LEGO di Indonesia, karena secara umum untuk perbandingan set yang sama, harga LEGO di Indonesia kurang lebih 2x lipat lebih mahal dari harga di Amerika Serikat dan 1,5x lipat lebh mahal dari harga di Australia.
Make the LEGO price cheaper globally so more of the population can buy them compared if they buy Bootleg or Clone LEGO because the prices of LEGO are too expensive. This is also the case for LEGO brand holder in Indonesia, because for comparison, the price of LEGO in Indonesia is twice more expensive than the price in US and 1.5 times more expensive than Australia.
Anak-anak om katanya juga suka buat LEGO. Gimana sih dulu cara 'ngeracunin' anak-anaknya?
(Your children also like to build LEGO. How do you make them to like LEGO?)
Sepertinya tidak ada anak yang tidak suka dengan LEGO, jadi tidak perlu diracunin pun anak-anak saya memang suka sembunyi-sembunyi mengacak-ngacak laci LEGO saya walaupun dibilang tidak boleh…hahaha.
All kids should like LEGO, so we do not need to persuade them to mess up with my LEGO drawers even though I already forbid them to do that…lol.
