Daniel seorang guru dari Bandar Lampung ini memiliki kegemaran merakit MOC dari LEGO. Dia sanggup menerima tantangan apa saja di dalam merakit suatu tema dari LEGO. Menurut Daniel, LEGO merupakan suatu mainan yang saat dipajang pada rak-rak akan membuat kita tersihir dan hendak memborong semuanya. Yah kita semua setuju sekali dengan pendapat tersebut, haha. Daniel a teacher from Bandar Lampung has a hobby to create MOC from LEGO. He is able to accept any challenge in creating a specific theme from LEGO. Nama saya Daniel, usia 41 Tahun, tinggal di Bandar Lampung, provinsi Lampung. Pekerjaan saya adalah guru.

Sudah berapa lama anda mengkoleksi LEGO®?
(How long have you been collecting LEGO®?)
Kalau koleksi LEGO, mulai 2004, berarti sudah 17 tahun, sebelumnya kenal LEGO itu usia 5 atau 6 tahun, tetapi belom tahu banget tentang LEGO, hanya sebatas mengenal LEGO sebagai mainan saja. Dan sangat disayangkan saya kehilangan set pertama yang saya punya waktu saya kecil.
I have been collecting LEGO since 2004, totalling 17 years. The first time I know LEGO is when I am 5 or 6 years old, but at that time I didn’t really know about LEGO, only knew that it was a toy. Unfortunately, I lost my first LEGO set when I was a kid.
Kenapa om sampai bisa suka dengan LEGO? Ada ceritanya gak nih?
(Why do you like LEGO? Any story?)
Alasan kenapa saya bisa suka banget sama LEGO banyak:
Pertama, saya merasa LEGO itu mainan yang kalau kita lihat dan kita pegang, dari bahannya aja udah beda, sesuatu yang punya nilai lebih, dari segi warna dan bentuk juga menarik. Kedua, LEGO itu sangat bervariasi jenis setnya, jadi kalo lihat di toko mainan, sepertinya wah banget dan rasanya kalo uang saya tidak terbatas, pengen banget punya semuanya hehehe. Ketiga, LEGO itu bisa kita buat sesuai apa yang kita mau, gak mesti sesuai panduan set yang disediakan. Jadi gak bikin bosen ketika kita bermain LEGO dan juga gak terbatas hanya untuk anak-anak aja, orang dewasa juga tetap cocok untuk bermain LEGO.
Keempat, LEGO itu bisa dimainkan untuk jangka panjang, gak seperti mainan yang kalo kamu mainkan 2 jam sudah berasa bosan, kalo LEGO, bisa sampai lupa waktu memainkannya. Kelima, saya bisa bawa LEGO buat sekedar hiburan kalo pas lagi liburan, buat foto-foto di pantai misalnya, asik deh pokoknya. Dan yang terakhir saya rasakan, LEGO itu bikin kita punya lebih banyak teman, dan dalam suatu komunitas juga bisa melatih kita untuk bisa bekerjasama lebih baik dengan teman (dalam event-event yang melibatkan community build) dan mungkin juga bisa bikin kita gak cepet pikun, karena harus mengingat di laci mana kita menyimpan part LEGO kita.
There are many reason why I really love LEGO:
First, I feel that LEGO is a toy when I see and touch, the material is different, something that has an added value, and very nice either from colour or form. Second, LEGO has set variations, so when you look at them in toy store, they look so awesome and if I had unlimited money, I would have buy them all, lol. Third, with LEGO we can create anything we want, you don’t need to follow the instructions. So we will never feel bored when playing with LEGO. It is not limited for kids, even adult can still play with LEGO.
Fourth, LEGO can be played for long term, unlike other toy after playing it for 2 hours, it will feel boring already, but with LEGO, time will move so fast when playing it. Fifth, I usually bring LEGO with me on vacation for entertainment, for taking photo at the beach for instance, it feel so great. And the last one, LEGO will get us more friends, and in a community, we can train how to work together better with friends (in events that involve community build) and maybe it can make us less senile, because we have to remember the drawers where we keep our LEGO parts.
Set pertama yang om waktu kecil ada masih ingat yang mana? Bisa dinfokan ke kita?
(What is your first set when you were a kid? Can you tell us?)
Set pertama yang saya punya waktu kecil set yg kecil juga, yaitu set classic space 6805 (Astro dasher), sayangnya set ini udah tidak tahu kemana, karena dulu cuma mengenal LEGO sebagai mainan biasa. Kemudian ketika mulai mengkoleksi LEGO Kembali, set yg pertama saya beli adalah set City 7905 (Tower Crane).
The first set I have when I were a kid is classic space 6805 (Astro dasher) set. Unfortunately, I already lost this set because I at that time I only knew LEGO as a not so special toy. Then when I started collecting LEGO again, the first set I bought is the City 7905 (Tower Crane) set.

Om kan jago buat MOC nih, kok bisa sih tertarik buat MOC? Diceritakan dong.
(You are an expert in building MOC, how could you become interested in building MOC? Please tell us.)
Hahaha…… saya tidak jago buat MOC, sebenernya tiap mau buat MOC, style saya itu trial n error, dan banyak nanya ke teman-teman di komunitas, gimana caranya kalo kita mau buat seperti ini ya? Atau mencoba cari tau trick untuk buat sesuatu. Dan menurut saya, MOC itu tantangan banget buat kita, kalau bisa jadi sesuai dengan apa yg kita mau, bahagia banget. Kalo masih gak sesuai, tetep seneng sih, karena bakalan dapet koreksi, masukan dari temen2 mocer lainnya. Dan yang menurut saya, paling seru tuh kalo buat suatu karya tapi kita bagi2 tugas (community build) dimana kita harus komunikasi dengan teman2 yang MOC nya akan disambungkan dengan MOC kita, ngatur sambungannya gimana, supaya bisa saling melengkapi, baiknya gimana dan bikin penasaran kalo nanti udah dijadiin satu, akan seperti apa jadinya. Dan biasanya MOC saya yang agak berantakan diantara MOC temen2 lain yang tekniknya udah wah banget hahaha…. Tapi justru itu salah 1 nilai serunya, karena saya bisa belajar lagi.
Hahahaha….I am not an expert in MOC. Frankly speaking, everytime I create a MOC, it was always trial and error and I always ask to my friends in the community how to build the creation in specific. Or asking them to know the trick to create something. And to me, MOC is a real challenge for us, because if it become something we want, we will become very elated. If not, then we will still be happy since we will receive feedback from our fellow MOCer. And to me the most exciting part is when we divide the work (community build) where we have to communicate to our fellow MOCer to have our MOC connected to us, how to get them right, to make them look seamless, how they will end up like. Those things will make us curious how the combined build will end up like. And usually, my MOC is the one that looks different from the other expert MOCer’ builds, lol. But there is 1 of the exciting point, because I can keep learning.
Medieval Community Build
Apa saja tema atau rakitan MOC yang biasa om buat?
(What are the MOC theme that you usually build?)
Gak terfokus ke 1 jenis tema sih, tapi memang lebih banyak ke tema City sih, Kadang suka iseng aja buat peralatan atau barang-barang dalam bentuk miniaturnya atau ya ukuran aslinya kalo emang aslinya ga terlalu besar. Selebihnya MOC yg dibuat sesuai mood aja.
I don’t focus on 1 specific theme, but mostly on city theme. Sometimes I like to build equipment or goods into their miniature sizes or real sizes if their real sizes are not too large. For other MOCs, I just build it according to my mood.
Berapa lama waktu yang terpakai untuk membuat sebuah MOC?
(What is the time duration to build a MOC?)
Bicara waktu pengerjaan MOC pastinya bervariasi, tergantung dari ukuran, part yang diperlukan dan juga ide di kepala. MOC yang paling lama gue kerjain itu sekitar 2 bulan. Sesuatu yang menurut orang lain simple, tapi buat saya susah banget karena harus ngepasin part yang kita punya. Untuk ukurannya, mungkin buat orang lain cuma perlu waktu sebentar. Tapi ada juga untuk MOC ukuran yang sama cuma perlu waktu 1 minggu. Intinya kalo bicara waktu itu, cenderung relatif.
The time duration to build a MOC varies, depending on the size, part availability and the idea. The longest MOC to build is about 2 months. It might looks simple to some other people, but for me it was very difficult because I have to build it using parts that I have. And for its size, to some people it might only take a while to build. But there was another MOC with same size but it only took me 1 week. So, if you want to ask about time duration, it is usually relative.
Raja Ampat MOC
Kalau om bisa memberikan masukan kepada perusahaan LEGO, apa yang akan om sampaikan kepada mereka?
(If you can give an input to The LEGO Company, what will you tell them?)
Beberapa part dengan warna tertentu seperti warna reddish brown, dark red, bahkan green, cenderung lebih mudah patah, dan kalo sudah patah itu, rasanya kesel aja walau ada part cadangan. Mudah-mudahan Perusahaan LEGO bisa menemukan solusi untuk ini.
Some parts with certain colour such as reddish brown, dark red, even green are susceptible for breaking. And when they break, it feels so annoying even though I have extra parts. I hope the LEGO Group can find the solution for this.
Nah, kita sudah dekat penghujung wawancara, ada pesan yang bisa om bagikan kepada para penghobi LEGO (AFOL) khususnya di Indonesia dan di seluruh dunia gak nih?
(We are nearing the end of the interview, any message that you can share to us AFOL especially in Indonesia and the rest of the world?)
Biasanya semboyan AFOL itu “ lebih baik menyesal membeli LEGO ketimbang menyesal karena ga sempet beli” dan saya setuju banget sama slogan ini, bukan cuma berlaku untuk set-set LEGO aja, berburu part LEGO dan mengkoleksinya juga punya keseruan tersendiri. Jadi, jangan sampe nyesel Ketika kamu melihat part atau set LEGO yang kamu pengin, tapi kamu ragu-ragu untuk beli. Hati-hati aja…. Penyesalan datang terlambat.
Usually the motto for AFOL is “Better to regret buying LEGO rather than regret for not buying it” and I totally agree with that slogan. It is not only valid for the LEGO sets, hunting LEGO parts and collecting them also has its own excitement. So, do not regret it when you see parts or LEGO sets you want but you hesitate to buy it. Be cautious, regret always comes too late.
MOC hasil karyanya sudah dipamerkan di mana saja nih?
(Where have your MOC creations been exhibited before?)
Pertama kali ikut pameran itu diajak oleh teman2 BhinnekaLUG di acara Jakarta Brick City tahun 2015 di Mal Emporium Pluit. Waktu itu benar2 baru belajar ngemoc dan Cuma buat 5 mobil, sementara teman2 buat bangunan-bangunan khas yang ada di Jakarta seperti Wisma BNI, Stasiun Jakarta, Monumen Pancasila Sakti, dll. Selanjutnya pernah juga ikut acara Dunia Brick 2016 di Balai Kartini, Dunia Brick 2017 yang juga di Balai Kartini, Olympic Bricks Festival 2016 di Mal Baywalk Pluit, Brickwave Big Bang Jakarta 2017 di JI-Expo Kemayoran, BrickFest 2018 di Pluit Village, Famgofest 2018 di ICE BSD dan terakhir tahun 2020 ikut Exhibition di mal Kota Kasablanka.
The first exhibition was when my fellow community member at BhinnekaLUG invited me to join with Jakarta Brick City event in 2015 which was located in Pluit Emporium Mall. At that time I just learn how to MOC and I only created 5 vehicles, while, my fellow MOCers built famous landmarks in Jakarta such as Wisma BNI, Jakarta Station, Pancasila Sakti Monument, etc. Then there was a time I was involved in DUnia Brick 2016 in Balai Kartini, Dunia Brick 2017 which was also in Balai Kartini, Olympic Bricks Festival 2016 in Pluit Baywalk Mall, Brickwave Big Bang Jakarta 2017 in JI-Expo Kemayoran, Brickfest 2018 in Pluit Village, Famgofest 2018 in Ice BSD and the last event was on 2020 in Kota Kasablanka Mall.

Sudah berapa jumlah kompetisi LEGO yang om menangkan? Saat apa saja?
(How many competition have you won? Where?)
Kompetisi…… uhm saya cuma MOCer kelas ringan, yg biasanya kalo ikut lomba cuma jadi penggembira hehehe…… persentase kalahnya lebih besar dari menangnya. Kalo ada kompetisi internal yang diadakan di komunitas, biasanya karena member Komunitas yang saya ikutin emang ga terlalu banyak, jadi separuh wajib lah untuk ikut lomba, dan saya pernah 2x menang, yang pertama Head 2 Head November 2015 (online battle 1 by 1: tema Mecha) trus MOC of the Month BhinnekaLUG, saat gathering bulan Oktober 2016 (tema Halloween).
Terus kalo diluar dari acara internal Komunitas (acara gabungan dengan beberapa komunitas LEGO), ada beberapa yang saya ikutin baik secara personal ataupun team, dan kebetulan pernah meraih : Best of Show (China Town diorama) Community build bareng temen-temen BhinnekaLUG pada acara Dunia Brick 2016, Best Stacked Vignette di Dunia Brick 2016, Habitat Minifigure Awards untuk kategori Best Suite Guy, Habitat Minifigure Awards untuk kategori Best of Sport, keduanya di acara Olympic brick festival 2016 di Mal Baywalk Pluit. Dan Best of All (Medieval Kingdom) Community build bareng teman-teman BhinnekaLUG di acara Dunia Bricks 2017.
Competition…hmm I only a lightweight MOCer, I only involve myself as an additional cast, lol. I have low percentage of winning a competition. I have won 2 times on internal competition within the community. Since the members of the community are not that many, it is sort of compulsory for everyone to join into the competition. The competition that I won were Head 2 Head November 2015 (online battle 1 by 1: Mecha theme) and MOC of the Month BhinnekaLUG at Gathering on October 2016 (Halloween theme).
Then for event from outside of the community (such as joint event with other LEGO communities), there are some that I had been into personally or as a team. I had won Best of Show (China Town diorama) Community with fellow members of BhinnekaLUG at Dunia Brick 2016, Best Stacked Vignette in Dunia Brick 2016, Habitat Minifigure Award for the Best Suite Guy category, Habitat Minifigure Award for Best of Sport category, both on Olympic brick festival 2016 in Baywalk Pluit Mall. And also Best of All (Medieval Kingdom) Community Build with fellow BhinnekaLUG members on Dunia Bricks 2017.
Piala kompetisi LEGO MOC
Anak-anak om juga suka rakit LEGO tidak? Mereka apa sudah bisa MOC?
(Do your children like to assemble LEGO? Can they create MOCs?)
Kebetulan anak saya ada 2, cowok dan cewek, mereka suka kalo ngerakit set LEGO, kalo untuk MOC biasanya kalo pas ada acara-acara tertentu aja mereka baru ikutan.
I have two children, a boy and a girl, they like to assemble LEGO sets. But for MOC, they only build it on certain LEGO events.
Apakah om punya preferensi khusus mengoleksi LEGO? Seperti tema, set atau bentuk spesifik?
(Do you have special preference for your collection? Maybe theme, sets or specific builds?)
Gak juga, cuma kalo pas lihat set baru dan tertarik sama model, part yang digunakan, minifigure yang disertakan, dan teknik pembuatannya, atau cara memainkannya seperti set Mario Bros, biasanya bakal nyari deh. Tapi dulu sempet suka sama yang menggunakan remote control sih, ada beberapa set RC selain LEGO Technic, Train, Boost , yaitu LEGO Racer 8378, dan 8369. Suka banget sama set ini yang sebenarnya kalo dilihat itu, lebih ke RC Car ketimbang “image” LEGO yang pake brick, plate ataupun part-part LEGO Technic. Tapi tetap menyenangkan untuk dimainkan. Dan saya juga suka koleksi minifigure, karena asik buat dibawa2 dan buat difoto juga seru.
Not really. Only when I see a new set and interested with the model, used parts, the minifigures and the building technique or interesting playability like the Mario Bros set, I will get it for sure. I used to like set with remote control, I owns RC sets like LEGO Technic, Trains, Boost, and LEGO Racer 8378 and 8369. I like those two sets better since it looks more like RC Car compared to other cars such as the cars from LEGO bricks, plate or other Technic parts. But it still fun to play. And I also like to collect minifigures since it is exciting to bring them and for taking photos.

Pengarang hampir tersedak saat membaca komentar Daniel bahwa saat mencari parts (komponen) LEGO di antara sekian banyak laci-laci kecil akan melatih kita agar tidak menjadi pikun. Walau terkesan lucu tetapi bagi anda yang merakit MOC akan menyadari kebenarannya. Apabila kita membuat MOC, biasanya kita akan memiliki banyak parts yang bervariasi sehingga harus dipisahkan di tempat yang terpisah. Karena akan sangat menyusahkan apabila tercampur menjadi satu.
Pengarang sering melihat banyak penghobi LEGO lainnya juga suka membawa minifigure mereka saat pergi jalan-jalan. Mereka biasanya akan mengambil banyak foto minifigurenya di tempat mereka liburan. Jadi ide membawa minifigure berjalan-jalan sangatlah tepat itu sangat tepat sekali.
Daniel selalu mengulang bahwa keahliannya membuat MOC masih minim, kalau menurut pengarang sih tidak juga. Lihat saja hasil karyanya membuat diorama Raja Ampat, Gereja Immanuel dan beragam MOC lainnya. Selain itu beberapa trophy yang dimenangkannya juga jelas menandakan dirinya berbakat di dalam merakit MOC. Maju terus Daniel, jangan sampai kendor!

The author almost choked when reading Daniel comment that when we are looking for LEGO parts among so many small drawer, it will train us not to become senile. While it is funny when we think about it, but it is actually true to those of you that build a MOC. Because when we build a MOC, we will utilise so many variations of part that we have to place them in separate containers. Otherwise, it will be difficult to find if we combined those different parts as one.
The author knows that other AFOLs like to bring their minifigures when they are travelling. They usually take their minifigures photo at the place of destination. So the idea of bringing minifigures while travelling is a right decision.
Daniel always repeats himself that his skill in building MOC is still not comparable to the other, but, the author disagree. Just look at his creations such as Raja AMpat diorama, Immanuel Church and other MOCs. Beside that, the trophies that he won signify that he is skilled in building MOC. Keep going Daniel, never stop moving forward!
